Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) issued the following statement after prominent Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora was sentenced yesterday:

“Government should work for the people, not a powerful, corrupt few. The political persecution of José Rubén Zamora makes a mockery of the Guatemalan justice system. I condemn this brazen attack on journalists like Zamora who are simply doing their jobs by shining a light on the inner workings of the government.

“Freedom of the press is essential for an informed public and a strong democracy. The world and I will be watching closely for any further signs of democratic backsliding in Guatemala and further violations of Zamora’s human rights. Although corruption may have won yesterday, I have faith that the brave Guatemalans fighting for the rule of law will one day prevail.”

Declaración de la Congresista Torres sobre la Condena Injusta de José Rubén Zamora

Washington, D.C.
